Nectar vs Casper: Which Foam Mattress Holds Up Past Year Three?
Nectar and Casper compete for the same buyer and solve the problem in different ways. Both are all-foam. Both are sold mainly online. Both are priced in the same bracket. The difference that decides which one you should buy is in the layer stack, and it shows up not on delivery day but around year three, when foam that was specified to a price starts to soften.
The layer stacks
Casper (the current One or Dream line) leads with a perforated or breathable foam layer, then a transition layer, then a dense base. The design brief is clearly “sleep cooler than classic memory foam” — the top layer is engineered for airflow rather than for contour.
Nectar leads with a gel-infused memory foam layer, then a transition layer, then a firm base. The design brief is “conforming pressure relief with a medium-firm feel” — the top layer is a memory foam, and it behaves like one.
That single difference explains most of what follows.
| Dimension | Nectar | Casper |
|---|---|---|
| Top layer | Gel-infused memory foam | Breathable perforated foam |
| Feel | Slow-conforming, medium-firm | Bouncier, more responsive, sleeps “on top” |
| Heat | Warmer — memory foam contours and traps | Cooler — perforations and an open top layer |
| Motion isolation | Excellent | Good, less than memory foam |
| Edge support | Moderate | Moderate |
| Firmness | One firmness, medium-firm | Varies by model; the line spans soft to firm |
| Trial | 365 nights | 100 nights typical |
| Warranty | Lifetime (limited) | 10 years |
What “holds up” means for foam
Foam does not wear out by cracking or breaking. It compresses. Each foam cell has a wall, and repeated loading causes the wall to buckle and eventually stay buckled. The rate depends on two things: density (how much material is in a cubic foot) and load (how much weight is on it).
A foam’s density rating is the single most predictive number. Polyfoam at 1.8 lb/ft³ or above and memory foam at 4 lb/ft³ or above will hold their shape under average use for years. Below that, expect measurable softening within 18 to 24 months, concentrated where the body loads most — the hip and shoulder.
Neither brand publishes full density figures for every layer, which is true of nearly every mattress sold online. What you can infer:
- Higher price within a brand usually means higher density, because that is where the cost is.
- A “medium-firm” mattress that feels soft on day one will feel softer at month 12. If you want firm at year three, buy firmer than you want.
- A lifetime warranty excludes impressions below a threshold, typically 1 to 1.5 inches. That threshold is the failure mode, which means the warranty is not a durability guarantee.
Which one fits which sleeper
Nectar suits: side sleepers who want pressure relief at the shoulder and hip, people who like the slow-conforming feel, couples where one person is a light sleeper (motion isolation is the strongest argument for memory foam), and back sleepers under about 200 lb.
Casper suits: hot sleepers who want foam without the heat, back and stomach sleepers who want a firmer surface with some give, people who dislike the “sinking” sensation, and anyone who wants firmness choice within a line rather than a single option.
Neither suits: a stomach sleeper above 200 lb, a heavy sleeper above 250 lb, or anyone who wants a bed that still feels new at year eight. At that weight, a coil core is the structurally better choice — see our mattresses for heavy sleepers guide. And if heat is the deciding factor, the materials logic in memory foam versus latex applies to both of these.
The trial period is doing more work than the warranty
A 365-night trial sounds like a durability guarantee and is not. It is a return window, and its real value is that it covers a full year of temperature seasons. A mattress that is comfortable in October may be unbearable in July.
The practical use of a long trial: buy the firmer option, sleep on it for 30 days, and if it is genuinely too firm, exchange for the softer one. Do not use the trial to “see if I get used to it” past 60 days — the answer is usually visible by week six.
What to buy with either
A mattress protector extends the useful life of any foam mattress by keeping moisture and dust mite allergen out of the top layer. This is the cheapest durability intervention available.
A pillow matched to your position changes comfort more than the mattress choice between these two. Our neck pain pillow guide covers loft by sleeping position.
A cooling topper if you choose Nectar and sleep warm — with the honest caveat from our topper guide that surface cooling is finite and a cooler room does more.
How we assessed this
A head-to-head is only useful if both sides are compared on the same axis. For every pair here we compare the construction or specification that explains the difference in use, the cost over the expected life rather than at checkout, the return and warranty terms, and the specific user for whom the cheaper option is genuinely the better one.
We also try to name the case where the comparison does not matter. Two products 3 percent apart on a specification that only shows up at the edge of the range are, for most buyers, the same product, and saying so is more useful than manufacturing a winner.
What we cannot verify: we have not measured both products side by side in a lab, so where a difference is a matter of feel we describe it as a matter of feel rather than dressing it as a measurement. Where one option wins only on price, we say that instead of inventing a performance argument for it. No brand pays for placement.

FAQ
Is Nectar or Casper better for side sleepers? Nectar, for most side sleepers, because the memory foam conforms at the shoulder. Casper is the better choice for a side sleeper who overheats.
Do both work on an adjustable base? Yes, both are all-foam and flexible enough for an articulating base.
Which has better motion isolation? Nectar. Memory foam deforms locally and slowly, which is exactly what you want if your partner wakes when you move.
Which is firmer? Casper, on average, and Casper offers firmness choice across its line where Nectar offers one medium-firm.
Is a lifetime warranty meaningful? Less than it appears. Read the impression threshold in the terms; that number, not the length, tells you what counts as a defect.
